What are dental bridges?

A dental bridge is a form of dental restoration used to “bridge” the gap left by one or more missing teeth. The dental bridge consists of the pontics (the fake teeth) and dental crowns for the abutment teeth (those on either side of the gap). Dr. Laya Omranian prepares the surrounding teeth and attaches crowns to them to support the pontics in between. A dental bridge can be made of numerous materials, including porcelain, gold, or alloys. However, porcelain bridges are the most natural and resemble actual teeth.

Your dental bridge options include…

Traditional Bridge

A traditional bridge is suitable for patients with healthy teeth on both sides of the missing teeth. It’s the most popular type of bridge. The dentist must shave off some of the enamel from the abutment teeth on either side of the space. The dental bridge consists of two crowns on either side of the pontics, and the crowns are attached to the prepared abutment teeth.

Cantilever Bridge

A cantilever bridge is suitable for patients with a healthy tooth on only one side of the missing teeth. Dr. Laya Omranian prepares the abutment tooth to receive the crown. The bridge consists of pontics and a dental crown on only one side, which is fastened to the abutment tooth. As such, in this case, the entire bridge is held in place by one crown.

Maryland Bridge

A Maryland bridge, also known as a resin-bonded bridge, is made of plastic teeth and gums supported by a metallic framework attached to the back of your healthy teeth. This is the least invasive option because your healthy abutment teeth don’t have to be filed down, but it’s not as stable or secure as traditional and cantilever bridges.

The benefits of dental bridges:

  • Restore your beautiful smile
  • Allow you to speak and chew properly
  • Restore optimal distribution of bite force
  • Prevent the surrounding teeth from moving out of place
  • Restore your confidence
  • Minimal maintenance required
  • Long-lasting dental restoration

The dental bridge process at Energy Dental

Your dental bridge journey starts with a personalized consultation with our dentists in Houston, TX. We examine your teeth and recommend the ideal type of bridge for your specific needs. Dr. Laya Omranian may also take a digital scan of your teeth to produce the ideal virtual model for your dental bridge.

We might prepare same-day dental bridges using our Cerec in-office Computer-Aided Design and Computer-Aided Manufacture (CAD/CAM) device. In these situations, you’ll walk out of the dental clinic with a complete set of teeth. However, if we must send the impressions to the dental laboratory, we’ll provide a temporary bridge until your permanent bridge is prepared.

During your second visit, usually scheduled a week or two after the first appointment, you will receive your permanent bridge. Dr. Laya Omranian will remove the temporary bridge and place the permanent bridge, helping you look and feel confident again. The entire process is painless and comfortable.
