Maintaining optimal at-home oral hygiene is essential. You must brush your teeth at least twice a day, floss regularly, rinse your mouth with an antibacterial wash, and eat balanced meals. However, optimal oral hygiene must also include regular professional teeth cleaning. At Energy Dental, we provide comprehensive teeth cleaning services to remove accumulated plaque and tartar, polish your teeth, and help you achieve (and maintain) perfect oral health.

What is professional teeth cleaning?

Professional teeth cleaning is an essential component of oral hygiene. Regardless of your best efforts, small food particles can get stuck in deep recesses of your teeth and gums. Over time, these food particles interact with your saliva and bacteria to form plaque, a sticky substance that coats your teeth and gums. Plaque hardens into a yellowish substance called tartar, which can’t be removed with regular brushing and flossing.

Over time, plaque and tartar may accumulate in the pockets of space between the teeth and gums, leading to excessive gum recession and periodontitis. Professional teeth cleaning helps you avoid gum disease and periodontitis. During teeth cleaning, the dental hygienist removes accumulated plaque and tartar from your teeth and gum line. As such, professional teeth cleaning helps you achieve and maintain optimal oral hygiene.

The benefits of regular teeth cleaning:

  • Remove surface stains from your teeth
  • Prevent gum disease
  • Remove plaque and tartar
  • Detect oral cancer at the earliest stage
  • Detect gum disease at the earliest stage
  • Ensure all dental restorations are healthy

The teeth cleaning process at Energy Dental

Oral Examination

Your professional teeth cleaning will start with a physical examination of your mouth. The dental hygienist will check your gums and teeth for inflammation and other signs of dental problems using a small mirror. If you have the signs and symptoms of gum disease, dental decay, or other problems, the dentist will run further tests and curate the appropriate treatment plan.

Plaque Removal

After the oral examination, the dental hygienist will remove the plaque and tartar from your gums and teeth using a mechanical or ultrasonic scaling tool. After scaling, the hygienist will brush your teeth with a gritty toothpaste, which will remove all remaining plaque and debris. You may also have to rinse your mouth with liquid fluoride to remove debris.

Fluoride Treatment

At the final stage, the dental hygienist will apply fluoride gel on your teeth, which will fight against cavities and bacterial decay. A fluoride varnish is also painted on your teeth, which hardens upon contact with saliva. The fluoride gel and varnish protects your teeth from bacterial decay for several months.

How often do I need teeth cleaning?

Most dentists recommend at least two professional teeth cleanings per year. However, the specific number of cleanings depends on your oral hygiene and health. Some patients can also get one cleaning per year, whereas others may need a dental cleaning every 3 months. Dr. Laya Omranian will recommend the ideal schedule for teeth cleaning.
